The tech giant, Google announced on Tuesday that 500 million people around the world are using Google Assistant every month across smartphones, TVs, smart home devices, and other gadgets. This is for the first time that the company has disclosed a metric like this.
Google Assistant, which is a voice-activated digital helper by Google and has half a billion monthly users worldwide, is trailing behind Apple’s Siri and Amazon’s Alexa according to the recent data.
Recent research conducted last month unveiled that Google Assistant grips 9% of the virtual assistant market while Apple’s Siri clutches 35% market share worldwide. However, it is important to keep in mind that it is just the install base and not the actual number of people using the virtual assistant that accounts for the market share each month.
Another study conducted in August 2019 revealed that Google is lagging behind Amazon in smart speaker market share. But whatever, the numbers seem in favor of Google as they indicate that there is tremendous room for growth and that in years to come the number of monthly active users could go much higher.
The good news is while announcing the number of monthly active users for Google Assistant, the company also announced introducing a few new features to the virtual assistant to be rolled out later this year.
Following are the new Google Assistant’s features that are on their way:
Longform Reading:
According to this new feature, a simple command like “Hey Google, read this page” will let the Google Assistant read even long articles for the users.
Scheduled Actions:
Google Assistant will also be able to perform a specific task at the given time of the day for users such as turning the lights on in the morning.
Sticky Notes:
This one will enable Google Assistant to post sticky notes on smart displays with simple commands like “Hey Google, leave a note.”
As the last piece of information in the series, the search giant also announced that the company will be expanding Google Assistant’s interpreter mode globally to airports, banks, and other businesses. This again could be another factor to boost the number of monthly active users as well as install base for Google Assistant even further.
